"This dissertation analyzes the patterns of social innovation\r\nwithin civil society-based Muslim philanthropic organizations,\r\nwhich are referred to as Lembaga Amil Zakat (LAZ). Social\r\ninnovation is one of the keys to the sustainability of Islamic\r\nphilanthropic organizations amidst the complex problems of\r\nmodern society. The study of sustainability of LAZ, as a nonprofit\r\norganization, is necessary as because the legitimacy of\r\nphilanthropic organizations is contingent upon public trust. To\r\nincrease the legitimacy and sustainability of LAZ in managing\r\nIslamic philanthropic funds, LAZ has utilized various\r\nstrategies to ensure organizational resilience to both internal\r\nand external organizational changes by, among other things,\r\nupholding maqāsid syarīʿah (goals of sharia) of zakat and\r\nfostering public welfare.\r\nIn conducting this research, I have used the qualitative\r\nmethod. Data were collected through interviews, observations\r\nand documentation to describe the organizational development\r\nof LAZ. The case study approach was utilized to explore the\r\nnature of social innovation, organizational scales and\r\ninstitutional networks of two major philanthropic\r\norganizations (LAZ) in Indonesia: Dompet Dhuafa (DD) and\r\nPos Keadilan Peduli Umat (PKPU). To enrich and strengthen my analysis, I also use the contemporary concept of maqāsid\r\ntheory developed by Jasser Auda (2015).\r\nBy analyzing the organizational patterns of two Islamic\r\nphilanthropic organizations, this dissertation shows how two\r\ntypes of social innovation (institutional expansion and\r\nempowerment projects) have had profound impacts on the\r\nsustainability and legitimacy of LAZ. DD and PKPU have\r\nmade attempts to foster social innovation by maintaining their\r\nIslamic identity, strengthening entrepreneural concepts and\r\nintensifying resource mobilization. Beneth the surface, social\r\ninnovation promoted by DD and PKPU is in line with maqāsid\r\nsyarīʿah (the objectives of Islamic law). Based on the\r\nprinciples Islamic law, these two philanthropic organizations\r\nhave also promoted inclusive values and ideas in philanthropy\r\nsuch as justice, equality, tolerance, and humanistic approach\r\nto alleviate poverty.\r\nIn order to attain the objective of Islamic law, DD and\r\nPKPU has initiated organizational changes while consistently\r\npreserving Islamic identity. As DD and PKPU relied their\r\nsources on public support and donation, especially from the\r\nMuslim communities, preserving Islamic identity became\r\nDD’s and PKPU’s priority. One of the most important finding\r\nthat this dissertation would argue is that social innovation\r\nformulated in LAZ has led to the inception of “religious\r\nvalues” that underpin giving (zakat and sedekah) behavior among urban Muslim communities. This “religious value”\r\nadds new value creation parameters from social innovations\r\nthat were previously developed by Luis Portales (2019):\r\neconomic, social, environmental and institutional values\r\ncreation. Above all, by referring to maqāsid syarīʿah, Islamic\r\nphilanthropic organizations are expected to address a broder\r\neconomic dimension of poverty by comprehensively paying\r\nattention to a multidimensional poverty."^^ .
