The early childhood nursery authoritarianism practice discovered during the field pre-observation underlay this research. Nine Javanese Muslim parents were interviewed during the pre-observation. Authoritarianism occurred when they teach their children reading, writing, and religious practice; ask them to do their homework; and teach them to behave. Parents occasionally lie or frighten their children to make them do what to do. Looking at the perspective of Islamic education, early childhood education, and the Javanese custom, this study aims to uncover what lies behind the authoritarianism and how it begins. Life history approach exploring individual experience and knowledge was employed in this qualitative research. Five theories (i.e. Baumrind nursery pattern, Piaget cognitive, theory of ecology Urie Brofenbrenner, Islamic children education of Al-Ghazali, and serat paliatma on Javanese custom children nursery) were used to analyze. According to these five theories, the tendency for authoritarian nursery lies on the experience received earlier, environment, religion education being instilled and custom. The results proved that the nine Javanese Muslim parents became authoritarian because of parents’ earlier nursery experience; parents’ expectation for having successful and religious children; the schools’ demand for their students’ literacy; parents’ envy; mothers’ psychological pressure vented on yelling and labeling; and parents’ physical and mental tiredness. From the perspective of Islamic education, early childhood education and the Javanese custom, the emergence of authoritarianism is that there has a change on the understanding of nursery itself. The changes, in Islamic education and early childhood education perspectives, are triggered by earlier experience received, good deed expectation, schools’ and society’s demand, not knowing the appropriate nursery method, and physical and mental tiredness of parents. From Javanese custom perspective, the changes are due to parents’ previous nursery experience, previous community’s way of raising children, parents’ physical and mental tiredness, and parents’ low education background. According to Baumrind, the nine Javanese Muslim parents are not purely authoritarian, but they combine it with different method which makes it pseudo authoritarianism. date: 2022-08-18 date_type: published pages: 262 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: PASCASARJANA thesis_type: doctoral thesis_name: other citation: Dwi Hastuti, NIM.: 17300016077 (2022) POLA ASUH OTORITER SEMU: PERSPEKTIF PENDIDIKAN ISLAM, PENDIDIKAN ANAK USIA DINI, DAN BUDAYA JAWA PADA SEMBILAN ORANG TUA MUSLIM JAWA DI YOGYAKARTA.
