description: Communication is important to social interaction. Gossip holds another role the informal social interaction as a part of interpersonal communication. It also needs listeners to apply the functions well. This research analyzes how the functions of gossip in the student of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta in establishing social group.  The purpose of this research is to find out the functions of gossip in establishing informal social group. Qualitative descriptive approach is used in this research. The data was gained by observing and interviewing the student of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The result shows that gossip has positive functions to sosial interaction of humans. Gossiping in an informal group could make the members feel attached emotionally and build trust among them. The members have the sense of belonging the comfort place to catch up and finally create a common goal for all the members as well.
