Computational studies using the NEURON simulation environment were carried out to model the realistic morphology of the CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons and to examine the signal spike characteristics (firing modes) in the reduced model. The model was constructed by adding ion gate mechanism based on Hodgkin Huxley conductance. Based on the results of the simulation, a realistic morphological model of the CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons was successfully made close to the actual shape. The model morphology of the realistic neuron consists of soma (cell body), basal dendritic branches, apical dendrite branches, and axon. The characteristics of the signal spike (firing mode) was occurred in the CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons were demonstrated using a reduced model. The simplification of the morphological structure was made in the form of a compartment cable model consisting of nine basal dendrites, one soma, and eleven apical dendrites. The results showed that the CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons have various characteristics of signal spikes (firing modes), which consist of three types including bursting, complicated behavior, and repetitive firing. These three types of firing modes depend on the density of conductance value in each compartment and the amount of current injected.
