Where the community has customs or habits of giving dowry called sompa. Like dowries in general, sompa is also given at the time of the contract or after the contract. It's just that, in the provisions of sompa, social strata are the main reference in terms of the size of the amount of property that must be given by the groom to the bride. Customary law used refers to the social strata used by the Soppeng Bugis community are measured using heredity, honor, wealth, and education. The higher the status, the greater the number of sompa. The existence of these customs implies that marriages are annulled and it becomes a measure of the value of the family and the bride in the eyes of the Soppeng Bugis community. Furthermore, this study uses a field approach (Field Research). The field approach is used to reveal the nature of sompa from the Soppeng Bugis community. Therefore, the collection of data used is by using interviews with informants and documentation. Interviews with informants became the author's primary data sources. Where the informants is the customary head of the Bugis Soppeng. Based on these informants, it will then be reviewed through the perspective of Islamic law. The Islamic legal theory used in this research is the rule of al-'Adah Muhakkamah. Through these rules, it can be confirmed whether the Sompa tradition is following the principles of Islamic law or not. The results of the study revealed that the Sompa tradition is a tradition that has been carried out from generation to generation and is an ancestral heritage of the Soppeng Bugis community. The measure used is kati, where the amount of 1 kati is 12 grams of gold. The size of 1 catty is the minimum amount for high society. Meanwhile, the middle class uses a lower minimum size. The impact of this measure, in the end, can have an impact on the cancellation of marriages. Although there are alternatives for some groups to reduce the number of sompa based on the results of the deliberations of the two parties. Furthermore, substantively, the sompa tradition does not conflict with Islamic law. This is because, in Islamic law itself, there is no strict prohibition on the minimum amount of dowry that must be given by a man to a woman. Nevertheless, it was found that there were motives in some circles to show the existence of this family to society. Where this means that a family with a large sompa, the family is seen as a respectable family. However, this motive does not invalidate the validity of the dowry.
