Wimax technology could reach many urban corners by ignoring communication barrier that called Non-Lineof- Sight (NLOS). If we compare with other technology, wimax has it own strong point than others that require the condition of Line –of-Sight, wimax has the ability to support NLOS communication. With this capability, wimax could coverage all of wimax costumers becomes more widespread. Beside, the trouble of wireless network caused by network congestion wireless fidelity (wi-fi) that should be installed indoors, but many of them was installed outdoors. This network congestion will cause many problems that called interference. This research doing qualitatively, using the case studies method. stages performed included literature studies, then do a metropolitan area network planning using fixed WiMAX technology by counting all the needs of prospect WiMAX customers bandwidth in Yogyakarta City based on data obtained in the field with the observation/surveys methods of data collection and get data collection from institutions then calculate the optimal number of the cells based on the data. This planning is done based on standard IEEE 802.16d (fixed Wimax) and will operate at frequency of 10.5 GHz. The implementation of this planning is preliminary description of division of the service area of each cells that will be planned. This is very beneficial to the relevant institutions as a consideration in building WiMAX infrastructure in the Yogyakarta city. %Z Pembimbing: Sumarsono, M.Kom., dan Mustakim, M.T.
