description: Customary practice of marriage is not usually a simply activity of ījāb qabūl, but there are stages before and after it. The same is true of one kind of customary marriage in Minangkabau which is Padang Pariaman Region characteristic, that is bajapuik tradition. Bajapuik tradition is a giving amount of money custom from the bride’s party to the groom’s party and its nominal has been negotiated by both sides mamak. For indigenous communities that are not following the tradition will be given certain social sanction, but in contrast to bajapuik tradition in Nagari Kuranji Hilir that its communities still do the tradition even though there is no sanction for who does not follow it. Then, this phenomenon is getting interesting to be explored and researched about the practice of bajapuik tradition in Nagari Kuranji Hilir and what motives bring about local communities still maintain the tradition. Then, can bajapuik tradition in Nagari Kuranji Hilir be considered as a law that society can follow according to ‘urf theory.  This study is a field research with qualitative method and analytical descriptive. This study uses sociological empirical approach and social action theory of Max Weber. The resource consists of primary and secondary resource. Primary data was collected with interviewing ninik mamak, alim ulama, cadiak pandai, and local communities who understanding the tradition. Secondary data was collected from amount of books and scientific journals.  The writter found characteristic of bajapuik tradition practice in Nagari Kuranji Hilir that contrast to bajapuik tradition in other regions because there is badoncek activity in it. Nagari Kuranji Hilir communities hold bajapuik tradition based on rational and irrational motives. Rationally, they do the tradition because certain goals and in order to certain values, and irrationally, due to the tradition has become a hereditary custom. Acording to ‘urf theory, bajapuik tradition in Nagari Kuranji Hilir can be considered as a law that society can follow.
