With MBS type, the pesantren is a unique prototype of Muhammadiyah education institution. It is also meant to respond the growing salafityped pesantren under the organization of NU. MBS is a prototype with which social capital can be accumulated and is spent on dominating pesantren arena, obtaining middle-class Muslim and Transnational Islam movement society?s interest. To reach the goal, a qualitative study with case-study type was conducted. Data were collected through observation, interview and documentation and were analyzed using (1) data condensation, (2) data display, and (3) drawing conclusion. The results show that 1) Muhammadiyah pesantren, in particular MBS of Yogyakarta, can collect social capital for institution?s development purposes. MBS develops three social capital: networking, trust, and values. Networking has practically begun since its establishment through the organization structure of Muhammadiyah from head office down to branches and twigs to gain support. 2) The social capital is supported by selection of distinct formal institutes, the structure of management, symbolic domination with sharing system and digitalizing the activities of pesantren. 3) Excellence maintenance is under some strategies: first, MBS of Yogyakarta accumulates and integrates social capital with three other capitals (i.e. symbolic-structural, tradition, and economic). Second, the curriculum is designed to meet the trend of middle-class Muslim and transnational Islam movement. Third, MBS is a prototype pesantren in which Muhammadiyah leaders of all levels ?branches, districts and local ? begin to follow and develop.
