This is due to the belief that traditional organizations are always governed by traditional, communal, familial, and trust-based principles. Whether philanthropic institutions in traditional organizations have developed and changed in accordance with rational (modern) principles remain a topic for further scrutiny. For this reason, the author examined the NU CARE-LAZISNU DIY, as one of the philanthropic institutions, in order to determine whether this organization is still managed in the long-established traditional ways or has undergone significant development and change. This study is a field research using normative and sociological approaches, with the data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data is then analyzed qualitatively through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. To answer the research problem, some theories are used as a framework, including 1) istislahi (classical and modern maqasid al-shari'ah), 2) Good Corporate Governance or GCG, and 3) bureaucratic rationalization. The results showed that first, philanthropy at the NU CARELAZISNU DIY has been managed in accordance with the principles of good corporate governance. Nevertheless, there are several aspects that have not been fully implemented and optimized. Second, in the light of istislahi theory, the management of philanthropy at NU CARE-LAZISNU DIY can be categorized into maslahah mu?tabarah and mas}lah}ah mursalah. In addition, all the programs have been arranged on a priority scale based on three levels of maslahat, namely al-mas}lah}at al-daruriyyat (primary benefit), al-maslahat al-hajiyyat (secondary benefit), and almas} lah}at al-tahsiniyyat (tertiary benefit. Third, philanthropic programs implemented by the NU CARE-LAZISNU DIY have been also aligned to the five maqa>s}id asy-syari>?ah. The management of philanthropy at the NU CARE-LAZISNU DIY has been transformed thanks to institutional, human resources, and fund management improvements. This research shows that the transition of the NU CARE-LAZISNU DIY from traditional to rational (modern) principles is not just mechanical, but also organic.
