Suwadi, S.Ag., M.Ag., M.Pd. abstract: The background of this research is the reality of the challenges of the times that are increasingly developing with all their complexities, demanding quick and precise policy adjustments in accordance with the times. To deal with changes that are not always predictable, students are needed who are able to develop all their potential openly, without pressure and responsibly. To be able to make this happen, it takes an understanding of policies that move quickly and continuously from the education component to something better. Historically, John Dewey had a progressive view of creating an atmosphere of independent education. This study aims to understand the concept of Freedom to Learn from the perspective of John Dewey's progressivism and its relevance to PAI. This research is a library research (library research). Analysis of data collection was carried out by reviewing books, research related to the concept of Merdeka Belajar and John Dewey's philosophy of progressivism, the Ministry of Education and Culture Website, and other media sources. The analysis technique used is content analysis. The results of the study show that: 1) The concept of Independent Learning is a learning atmosphere that provides responsible freedom to students with all their potential so that they can develop according to the needs of the times. 2) The concept of Independent Learning applied in Indonesia is a learning atmosphere that provides responsible freedom to students so that they have personalities that are in accordance with Pancasila and have competencies that are relevant to the times. 3) The Relevance of the Free Learning Concept in John Dewey's Progressivism Perspective with PAI aims to create fun and liberating learning. Students and educators play their roles and grow together to realize learning goals.
