"halawat Emprak is a Javanese Islamic art which has four elements at once,\r\nnamely dance, prayer lyrics, music, and costumes. Shalawat Emprak is usually a\r\ncommunity art in rural areas in Java. In this case, Shalawat Emprak Klenggotan\r\nVillage was cared for and developed by the Cultural Islamic Boarding School led by\r\nJadul Maula. Shalawat Emprak Klenggotan Village had faded and lost its popularity\r\nin the 80s, then was revived and developed again in 2011 at the Kaliopak Islamic\r\nBoarding School. Shalawat Emprak was introduced widely by collaborating with\r\nseveral arts and boarding schools that already had big names such as Ahbabul\r\nMusthafa – Habib Syech, Yogyakarta Krapyak Islamic Boarding School, Bethoveen,\r\nUIN Sunan Kalijaga Campus and others. Therefore Shalawat Emprak is important to\r\nstudy because perhaps (Shalawat Emprak) is the only Islamic art that is revived and\r\ndeveloped in Islamic boarding schools which incidentally focuses on studying Islamic\r\nknowledge normatively. The research problem is formulated in two questions, namely:\r\n1) How is the concept of cultured Islam in Emprak prayer? 2) How does the meaning\r\nof the symbol in the Shalawat Emprak element at the Kaliopak Islamic Boarding School\r\nrepresent Cultured Islam, if using Roland Barthes' Semiotic approach?\r\nData collection was carried out by direct observation for about two years as a\r\nstudent at the Kaliopak Islamic Boarding School, interviews with Jadul Maula,\r\nMulyanto (the performer of Shalawat Emprak), several students at the Kaliopak\r\nIslamic Boarding School, and documentation of Shalawat Emprak. This study uses the\r\ncommodification of religion as its analytical tool and the semiotic approach from the\r\nperspective of Roland Barthes to dissect the denotative and connotative meanings in\r\neach element of Shalawat Emprak.\r\nThis study found that in the four elements of Shalawat Emprak, only two\r\nelements have connotative meaning, namely the lyrics of Shalawat and the dance\r\nmovements. In the systematic lyrics, it is written the story of the Prophet's journey from\r\nbirth to adulthood, and the dance movements match the lyrics that are read and have\r\ndenotative and connotative meanings. Meanwhile, the elements of music and costumes\r\ndo not have special meanings and rules. It was also found that the reason Jadul Maula\r\nrevived Shalawat Emprak was when the 500th commemoration of Sunan Kalijaga was\r\nheld, the theme was \"a matter of identity, diversity in diversity\". Sunan Kalijaga spread\r\nIslam through culture. Shalawat Emprak Klenggotan Village which feels good and\r\ncaptures strong cultural Islamic values, has strong messages and expressions. Apart\r\nfrom that, Cultured Islam is the idea of Jadul Maula which embraces and\r\naccommodates locality. Shalawat Emprak is performed with pleasure by the\r\nperpetrators (artists) and there is no intention of making a commercial profit. Shalawat\r\nEmprak is recognized as an expression of love for the Prophet Muhammad from the\r\nJavanese people. Shalawat Emprak is a way of practicing and studying Islam by the\r\nJavanese people, using the Javanese \"language\" so that the Javanese people\r\nthemselves can understand and absorb it."^^ .
