abstract: Self-adjustment is the most important process that every individual must do when
in a new environment. Self-adjustment is an action taken by individuals to
harmonize themselves with their environment in order to achieve harmony in life.
The purpose of this research was to find out the dynamics of self-adjustment of firstyear
in Minangkabau students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This research
was a qualitative with case study approach. This research alsignificant other used
snowball sampling technique to determine the research sample. The data were
collected through semi-structured interviews and observations with three main
informants and three significant others who are the close friends of the informants.
The research findings indicate that all three informants faced significant challenges
in their adaptation, such as homesickness, culture shock, and insecurity.
Nevertheless, all three informants managed to withstand the perceived pressure by
adhering to the social values instilled by their families and understanding and
paying attention to the social patterns within the campus environment.
