The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The informants in this research were three Islamic boarding school alumni. The technique used in determining the research sample was the snowball sampling technique with semi-structured interviews as the data collection method. The research results show that there is cognitive dissonance among Islamic boarding school alumni in the form of feelings of discomfort and regret. The factors that cause cognitive dissonance are logical inconsistencies in the form of attitudes that do not match the behavior and cultural values that are different between the Islamic boarding school environment and the new environment where they currently live. Efforts made by Islamic boarding school alumni to reduce cognitive dissonance are adding new cognitive elements by using incorrect understanding of religious propositions as justification for deviant behavior. But these efforts do not last long so they feel repeated dissonance. Then another effort they made was to change their behavior, such as stopping deviant behavior and returning to carrying out their religious obligations.
