N2  - The character of respect and politeness is a very important character to make interpersonal relationships harmonious through mutual respect, appreciation, affection and love. However, currently there are still many students who have not implemented these characters, resulting in unhealthy relationships, such as bullying, waiting in line, brawls, and so on. With the existence of Islamic boarding schools, it is hoped that they can build a respectful and polite character through the role of caregiver. Seeing the importance of the role of the caregiver, this research is necessary with the aim of finding out how caregivers build character and to find out the role of caregivers in building respectful and polite character.
The type of research used is field research which requires researchers to come directly to the research location with a sociological approach, so that this research will explore relationships between humans both individually and in groups by looking at existing behavior and culture. Meanwhile, the research method used is qualitative, so researchers must describe the data found in the field in depth.
The results of the research show: 1) The way caregivers build respectful and polite character in students at the Afkaaruna Al Islamy Islamic boarding school is done through explaining understanding of character (moral knowing), explaining character feelings (moral feeling), and getting used to applying character (moral action) to students. 2) Caregivers play an important role in developing the respectful and polite character of students at the Afkaaruna Al Islamy Islamic boarding school. This is because the caregiver is the founding father of the Islamic boarding school, someone who is an elder at the Islamic boarding school, and a kyai who is used as a role model for the students. 3) In building the respectful and polite character of students at the Afkaaruna Al Islamy Islamic boarding school, caregivers play a role in five things, namely as leaders, educators, coaches, motivators and role models for the students.
