abstract: Sea turtles are endangered animals that are protected, yet their existence remains threatened. Conservation aims to wisely preserve natural resources. At Pantai Pelangi in Yogyakarta, the local community conducts sea turtle conservation to protect these animals. Conservation management faces challenges such as illegal poaching and funding losses during the Covid-19 pandemic. The 4K Community assists conservationists through ecotourism activities focused on education and ecosystem improvement. This research aims to explain the reasons for establishing conservation efforts and the support from the 4K Community, as well as to examine the role of the 4K Community in managing ecotourism conservation at Pantai Pelangi, Yogyakarta, including the supporting and inhibiting factors.
This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling based on specific criteria, and data validation was conducted with source and method triangulation. Data analysis includes collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing.
The research results show that conservation at Pantai Pelangi, Yogyakarta, is driven by the awareness of one community member to preserve sea turtles for future generations. The 4K Community, initiated by biology students, assists conservationists facing management challenges. The 4K Community plays a positive role as companions to conservationists and educators for tourists, with activities such as beach patrols, conservation education at hatcheries, beach cleanups and ecobricks, turtle releases, and pandan tree planting. Ecotourism conservation management is supported by the consistency of volunteers, cooperation from various parties, and the use of social media for information and education. Challenges faced include the legal status of the beach as part of the sultanate’s territory and the need for increased awareness and participation from the local community around Pantai Pelangi, Yogyakarta.
