abstract: Continuing the lineage or having children is one of the goals of marriage in Islam. However, with the emergence of the childfree phenomenon, it has become a new or contemporary problem in the field of family law. Childfree became known in Indonesia when several public figures dared to voice their choice to be childfree, including one of them, Gita Savitri Devi, who is a content creator. His choice to be childfree gave rise to pros and cons reactions from society. This problem is the basis of this research, focusing on childfree as a life choice made by Gita Savitri Devi and analyzed based on maqāşid asy-syarī'ah.
This research is library research (library research), which is descriptive analysis. The primary data source for this research is Gita Savitri Devi's YouTube video which discusses childfree, while the secondary data sources for this research are the Koran, hadith, books, journals and previous research. The data collection techniques use documents and library data. The data analysis used is data collection, data reduction, data presentation, data interpretation, and drawing conclusions. Then the data obtained is explained using a normative approach and maqāşid asy-syarī'ah theory.
The results of childfree research conducted by Gita Savitri Devi analyzing maqāşid asy-syarī'ah, there are two conclusions. First, Gita Savitri Devi and her husband decided to be childfree for six main reasons, all of which are personal and general reasons that are used as reasons for someone to choose childfree. Second, childfree carried out by Gita Savitri Devi at the level of urgency of maqāşid asy-syarī'ah has not yet reached the level of ḍarūriyyāt and is contrary to the objectives contained in maqāşid asy-syarī'ah, namely maintaining religion ( حفظ الدين ), maintaining offspring ( حفظ النسل ), and maintaining property ( حفظ المال ).
