abstract: The work ethic of santri is one of the attitudes that is upheld as a result of the learning pursued by pesantren. The learning includes Islamic character education and skill development. In addition, the existence of a pesantren culture or pesantren environment in the learning process also encourages the formation of the work ethic of students. The work ethic that is formed such as independence, diligence, discipline, hard work, creativity, patience, and others. The formation of this work ethic is often a benchmark in assessing and appreciating santri in a respectable stratum in society. In this study, researchers analyzed the phenomenon in Tambakberas Hamlet, Jombang. The selection of the research location, because it is in accordance with the social conditions of the community that has good religious quality as an influence of the pesantren environment in it. So that this creates greater social recognition of santri, who are often considered spiritual leaders and moral role models in society.
Descriptive qualitative method is used as a method in this research, which presents data in the form of descriptions. The purpose of this method is to understand the value of variables without producing comparisons with other variables. This research will provide an overview of how the santri work ethic relates to the santri's respectable strata in society. The
analysis in this study uses Max Weber's theory of social stratification and work ethic. According to Weber, work ethic is a doctrine about work that is believed to be something right and good and is realized specifically in work. Weber also explained that social stratification is the result of several factors which have three main indicators, namely social power, social prestige, and social privilege. Through this theory, it can be used to analyze the description of the work ethic of santri, and the respectable strata that exist in Tambakberas Jombang Hamlet.
Based on the explanation above, there are two problem formulations proposed in this study. First, how the pesantren culture in shaping the work ethic of the santri. Second, how the relationship between the work ethic of santri and the respectable strata in the community of Tambakberas Hamlet Jombang. On the data that has been analyzed, this study produces two findings. First, the pesantren environment, including the pesantren culture, is one of the factors that influence the process of forming the work ethic of santri. Second, explaining the relationship between santri work ethic and respectable strata which has a significant correlation with the awards and social recognition received by santri in the community.
