abstract: The Java people hold the customs, culture and traditions of their ancestors. They have a profound belief in preserving the ancestral culture that forms the Java ethnic identity. Besides, the social circumstances that form solidarity are also the reason why they carry out the sura. The author's premise is that there is a shift in the understanding of the kenduri sura that was originally done because of customary demands, becoming because of social needs. The purpose of this research is to describe the behavior of the Dukuh Brengkungan community against the sura traditions, and determine their reasons why they still practise the traditions.
This research is qualitative research, with a kind of field research aimed at directly understanding social solidarity in the tradition of kenduri sura in Dukuh Brengkungan, Pogung, Cawas, Klaten. Primary data sources in this study are obtained directly from informants through interviews, while secondary sources are from journals, books, previous research related to research topics. The data gathering technique in this study uses triangulation methods/techniques, like interviews, observations, and participant observations. The data collected was analyzed using Emile Durkheim's theory of social solidarity. The data that has been analyzed is described in an informal way, in the usual language.
The results of the study indicate that the Dukuh Brengkungan community has a similar belief in practicing the kenduri sura tradition, with the pretext of avoiding the scourge or misfortune that exists in the month of Sura. That belief and belief arose on the basis of the agreement of the majority of the people of Dukuh Brengkungan. The belief of the majority of the Dukuh Brengkungan community in the kenduri sura tradition is to preserve the ancestral heritage and aculturation of Java culture and Islamic religion. The process of social agreement that gives rise to the majority's belief in the tradition of the Sura, forms mechanical social solidarity. Thus, this kenduri sura traditions bind the community of Dukuh Brengkungan, because the traditions are the result of the agreement created by the local community, which is considered a rule that must be agreed together. The forms of mechanical social solidarity with the kenduri sura tradition are, among other things, separation, cooperation, joint arrangements, involvement in the implementation of kenduri sura traditions and mutual respect and respect for each other.
