It will be experienced by every living thing in the world. This research purposes to reveal how systemic functional linguistic is utilized in Rumi?s poem, how Rumi defined the death and why his definition is different from what most people gave. This analysis uses Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL), a theory introduced by Halliday. The theory focuses on the text. The object of this research is the whole lyric of Rumi?s When I Die poem in which the method used is a descriptive qualitative method. The lyric of this poem mostly denies the assumptions commonly made by most people. Some of them are about the death considered as losing the world out, as a scarring matter and as the end of the life. The result of the analysis shows that Rumi claimed the death as arriving at etternal love taking into consideration the fact that there is a paradise behind the grave. The SFL theory used includes three metafunctions which become elements to explore meanings in Rumi?s When I Die. They are interpersonal, ideational and textual metafunctions. Through ideational metafunction, Rumi expresses the representation of death. Through interpersonal metafunction, Rumi expresses the meaning of the poem shown by the speech role. Through textual metafunction, Rumi expresses messages in the context of the clause.} }
