description: This study aims to find references to social deixis expressed by the main character in the film The Big Sick (2017). This film tells the story of Kumail Nanjiani, a Pakistani Muslim immigrant who has lived in America for a long time. He wants to live freely like an American without being bound by the customary rules that are still adhered to by his family. By using Fillmore’s social deixis theory, the researcher classifies the data into types of social deixis based on the theory. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative by explaining the references from existing social deixis data. Based on the research results, the researcher found 37 data of social deixis expressions which were classified into five types of social deixis, namely person marking; speech levels; names, titles and kinship terms; linguistic performances can count as social acts; and linguistic performances can accompany social acts. Existing social deixis has different references and depends on several factors such as participants, goals, and norms in a speech event.
