The benefits of this research are theoretical and practical. The theoretical benefits are expected to provide academic insight and enrich the intellectual treasure, especially studies related to the role and contribution of Nusantara scholars to the world of literacy, especially Islamic religious literacy. Practical benefits, this research is expected to contribute to the reference of how contemporary scholars can become actors of Islamic literacy practices through the written works produced. This research was conducted using historical research method with library research. The data collection technique used is documentation. The data analysis technique in this research is the historical content analysis technique which consists of four stages, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography.The results of this study can be concluded that the practice of Islamic literacy in Indonesia has existed since the entry of Islam in Indonesia. The practice of Islamic literacy can be achieved because the practice aims to provide an understanding of Islam that is adapted to local culture. The form of literacy practice that emerges is a literacy practice that pays attention to local language and composition, in this case Javanese language and script. KH. Ahmad Rifa'i is an Indonesian ulama figure in the 19th century who contributed to the teaching of Islam and anti-authority culture. In the practice of Islamic literacy, KH.
