"The Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) holds a strategic\r\nposition in maintaining and fostering inter-religious harmony in\r\nIndonesia through inter-religious dialogue. However, this strategic\r\npotential remains underutilized, particularly concerning membership\r\nand the roles played by its members, which are predominantly\r\nmasculine. This is evidenced by the minimal involvement of women\r\nin the organization. This research examines women’s agency in\r\nFKUB, positing that women are essential agents in promoting\r\ntolerance and peace. The study addresses three primary issues: the\r\nstructural factors contributing to the lack of female participation in\r\nFKUB and its implications for interreligious dialogue in Indonesia;\r\nwomen’s agency in FKUB, including their perspectives on gender,\r\ndiversity, and interreligious dialogue; and the strategies employed by\r\nwomen to navigate the masculine-dominated FKUB structure. This\r\nqualitative research combines fieldwork and library research,\r\ninvolving seventy-eight informants —forty-seven women and thirtyone\r\nmen— from FKUB members across twenty-seven provinces and\r\ndistricts/cities, spanning eastern Indonesia (East Nusa Tenggara),\r\ncentral Indonesia (South Kalimantan, Bali, South Sulawesi, and North\r\nSulawesi), and western Indonesia (Aceh, Lampung, West Sumatra,\r\nNorth Sumatra, Riau Islands, DKI Jakarta, Special Region of\r\nYogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java). The study adopts a\r\nparticipatory research approach, emphasizing human subjectivity and\r\nawareness in knowledge creation and placing humans in an\r\nemancipatory and personal context. Data collection and analysis\r\nutilized two approaches: a sociological approach focusing on the\r\ninteraction between religion, politics, culture, and society and a\r\nphenomenological approach emphasizing the lived experiences of\r\nresearch subjects.\r\nDrawing on Bourdieu’s concept of masculine dominance and\r\nConnell and Messerschmidt’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, the\r\nresearch identifies four structures of masculine dominance in FKUB:\r\nsignificant gender inequality in the management structure (men 91.9%and women 8.1%), male dominance in decision-making, gender bias,\r\nand the marginalization of women in decision-making processes.\r\nFactors influencing this dominance include patriarchal social\r\nconstructions, internal challenges faced by women in religious\r\ncouncils, gender-biased interpretations of religious teachings, and\r\nambiguous government regulations and their implementation. The\r\nresearch reveals that hegemonic masculinity manifests in FKUB\r\nthrough both structural and cultural subordination of women.\r\nNevertheless, there has been an increase in female membership in\r\nmany FKUBs due to efforts promoting a more gender-equitable\r\nhabitus, both individually and institutionally. According to Bourdieu’s\r\ntheory of social practice, two primary habitus are identified within\r\nFKUB: an inclusive vision of religious and ethnic differences, yet\r\nlacking inclusivity for gender diversity, and male dominance in\r\nreligious organizations shaping FKUB members’ perceptions of\r\nwomen’s roles. An alternative habitus influencing female FKUB\r\nmembers is their belief in gender equality, supported by their broad\r\ninsights and active involvement in various organizations, especially\r\nwomen’s organizations. As active agents, women in FKUB engage in\r\ncriticism, negotiation, lobbying, and exerting pressure to transform\r\nmasculine and unjust situations, leveraging their social, cultural,\r\nsymbolic, and economic capital. The study identifies five strategies\r\nemployed by female FKUB members to overcome challenges:\r\nassertive communication, supportive, educational, successive, and\r\nintervention. Additionally, three characteristics that strengthen their\r\nagency are a flexible communication style, detail-oriented skills, and\r\na soft approach unique to women. With women’s agency and FKUB\r\nmembers adept in diversity and gender perspectives, it is theoretically\r\nfeasible to develop a new habitus within FKUB, characterized by an\r\ninclusive vision for gender diversity. This will foster a balance\r\nbetween masculinity and femininity and achieve equal leadership for\r\nmen and women in FKUB."^^ . "2024-08-08" . . . . "UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA"^^ . . .
