N2  - In the pesantren tradition, a Kyai holds a highly central role. Beyond
leading the pesantren, the title "Kyai" is also a mark of respect and recognition of
a person's expertise in Islamic knowledge and their cultural leadership within the
community. If a Kyai is understood in this way, then it is necessary to study the
influence of a Kyai in shaping the character of an institution, particularly
regarding the authority of a Kyai in the pesantren. This research aims to
understand the role of a Kyai's authority in religious communication among the
students and the community at Kanzul Uum. From this study, it can be concluded
that a Kyai's authority is reflected in the guidance provided on religious matters,
political attitudes, education, and teaching. This guidance is implemented through
policies and advice that are then applied in various pesantren activities and routine
events.This research also aims to study and analyze Max Weber's theory of
leadership authority in the context of pesantren leadership, particularly at the
Kanzul Ulum Islamic Boarding School. The focus is on how a Kyai possesses
authority that earns respect and obedience from the community, especially within
the pesantren environment. The types of authority held by a Kyai are analyzed
using Max Weber's authority theory. This study employs a qualitative approach
with a case study method, and data was collected through observation, interviews,
and documentation. The data processing involves data reduction, data
presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research results show that Kyai
Miftah's leadership encompasses traditional, charismatic, and legal authority.
