Apart from that, it is also to determine the effectiveness of the problem based learning approach using the numbered heads together method on student activity. This research is a quantitative research type of quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design research design. Sampling in this study used a purposive sampling technique and then expert sampling to select 2 equivalent classes. The classes used in this research were class VIII A and class VIII D MTs Negeri 9 Bantul. Then a pretest is carried out to determine initial abilities and a posttest to determine final abilities. The independent variable in this research is a problem based learning approach using the numbered heads together method, and the dependent variable is mathematical problem solving ability and student activity. The research instruments used include teaching modules, student worksheets, pretest and posttest questions, and student activity scales. The data analysis technique used in this research is the independent sample t-test. The results of the research analysis showed that the problem based learning approach using the numbered heads together method was more effective than the conventional approach on mathematical problem solving abilities and student activity in class VIII. This can be seen from the results of the mathematical problem solving pretest scores from the experimental class and the control class which did not have a significant average difference. Then it can be seen from the value signifikansi posttest of mathematical problem solving of 0.010 and the value of signifikansi postscale of student activity of 0.017, both of which are {\ensuremath{<}}0.05. So it can be concluded that the problem based learning approach using the numbered heads together method is more effective than the conventional approach for students' mathematical problem solving abilities and activeness.} }
