"Although the two al-Irsyad organisations – Jam‘iyyah al-Irsyad\r\nal-Islamiyyah (hereinafter referred to as al-Islamiyyah) and al-Irsyad\r\nAssociation (hereinafter referred to as the Association) – should share\r\nunderstandings and Mabadi al-Irsyad (al-Irsyad ideology)\r\nimplementation, there are, in fact, significant differences on it.\r\nConflict between the two organisations impede the development of\r\neducation institution under them. Three main targets to aim in this\r\nstudy are: first, to analyze what causes the disunity; second, to trace\r\nthe Mabadi al-Irsyad implementation in each party; third, to analyze\r\nthe factors which successfully maintain the parents’ interest in al-\r\nIrsyad school high, despite the disharmony. This historical research\r\napplied sociological approach which was meant to examine the\r\nstructure and function of the organizations – domiciled in five towns\r\n(Semarang District, Tegal, Pekalongan, Purwokerto, and Cilacap)\r\nwithin the Central Java Province – and its dynamic. The results\r\nshowed the followings. First, the concept of Mabadi al-Irsyad was\r\nfirst formulated and introduced by four Surkati’s students: Salim bin\r\nAwad Sungkar al-Umrei, Abdullah Badjerei, Umar B. Sulaiman Naji,\r\nand Abdullah Salim al-Attas. It was then re-formulated in Conference\r\nXXX in Bondowoso in 1970 before being enhanced by the\r\norganization board. It was during the concept-enhancement process\r\nthat disunity began due to the single-principle-of-Pancasila policy\r\nduring the New Order reign. Second, the implementation of Mabadi’\r\nal-Irsyad in education world appeared in two different education\r\nmodels. Whilst a religious-conservative character model was\r\nemployed by the Association, a modernist-futuristic character one\r\nwas taken by al-Islamiyyah. The former focused on Islam as a\r\nreligion, Arabic, and missionary endeavor in which Arabic and\r\nReligion form the predominant curriculum. The modernist-futuristic\r\nmodel, on the other hand, emphasized the comprehension of\r\nknowledge in general and English, with favorite higher education – national and international – orientation. Third, regardless of the\r\ndisharmony in the foundation, the parents’ interest to send their\r\nchildren to al-Irsyad schools remained high. It is the success of\r\nkeeping its positive image and reputation that attracted parents’\r\nattention and interest in both al-Islamiyyah school and the\r\nAssociation one. In addition, the schools had high education quality\r\nas they applied Mabadi’ al-Irsyad curriculum, which is\r\ncomprehensive and relevant to global needs.
