"This dissertation discusses a tussle for identity of former thugs\r\nin a religious community in Solo through friendship. The tussle for\r\nidentity occurred soon after the falling of New Order reign in 1998,\r\nmarking off the end of authoritarian government and the beginning of\r\ndemocracy in Indonesia. As an underground movement during the\r\nNew Order, an Islamic Community appeared to be a missionary driver\r\nand demanded Islamic sharia to apply. At the same time, a Sufi order\r\ngroup of Syadziliyah, focusing on coaching Solo people in spiritual\r\nmatter, emerged. With the head office in Ta’mirul Islamic Boarding\r\nSchool in Solo, Syadziliyah taught and persuaded the ex-thugs not to\r\ncommit violence. Looking at these two Islamic communities, the\r\ndissertation is to examine the religious community of former thugs\r\n”Juba Rescue” in affiliation with Syadziliyah order, and of former\r\nthugs “Ekspreso” in affiliation with Islamic community. The study\r\nemployed the theory of identity by Erving Goffman, which describes\r\nhow the spoiled identity people navigate themselves in their society.\r\nThis qualitative study applied the phenomenology approach,\r\nwhich describes the appraisal of former thug’s phenomenon on a past\r\nunderstanding and background basis. Data were obtained under three\r\ntechniques: interview, observation, and documentation. The\r\ninformants for interview were determined through purposive sampling\r\ntechnic with certain criteria – e.g. the founders of each religious\r\ncommunity, sitting members and public figures having experience and\r\nunderstanding of the two groups. Observations were carried out\r\nthrough the involvement in the groups’ religious and social activities.\r\nThe researcher also observed the topics the group members talked\r\nabout while in base camp or gathering place. The documents comprised photos, religious activity records, books, journals, news on\r\nthe groups’ activities. The collected data were validated using source\r\ntriangulation method, crosschecking the multi-sources data, then\r\nanalyzed in three steps: data reduction, data display and conclusion\r\ndrawing.\r\nThis dissertation argues that the former thugs tried collectively\r\nto turn from earlier identity to a new one by playing in the front stage\r\nwith religious background. They performed an adjusted play to suit\r\nthe viewpoint of others; they call ustaz to address the ex-thugs who\r\nhave learnt Al-Quran and taught it to peers, ndoro to name the ones\r\nwho own culinary business, akhi to call ordinary members. To\r\nhighlight the new image, the spoiled-identity alter their performances,\r\nspiritual attitudes, ideologies and economy managements. The Islamic\r\npositive-orientation front stage, however, did not drive away the back\r\nstage, leaving the true identity of an ex-thug with them – living a\r\ndifficult life, facing legal action, and fear of police. All of these\r\nbrought the researcher to conclude that the emergence of religious\r\ngroups of former thugs in Solo did not merely deal with the good will\r\nto upgrade their faith, but worldly matters as well. The dissertation\r\nalso argues that collective identity developed by “Juba Rescue” was\r\nModerate Muslim, while the “Ekspreso” was Conservative Muslim.\r\nThe values of moderate made “Juba Rescue” more open, take the\r\nexisting culture, and engage with the local government and other\r\ncommunities. The values of conservative, on the other hand, led the\r\n“Ekspreso” members to resist the government as they call it tagut and\r\nrefute cultures which foul the teaching of Islam with bidah, takhayul\r\nand khurafat.\r\nThe theoretical contribution of the dissertation is that the\r\nnavigation of spoiled identity individuals is done collectively. They\r\njoin a religious community and carry out various religious and social\r\nactivities to regain social interaction acceptance. This enriches\r\nGoffman’s theory that says that Western people with spoil identity run\r\na navigation individually."^^ . "2024-08-22" . . . . "UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA"^^ . . .
