        abstract = {Dowry is always an interesting topic to discuss within the scope of family law. Dowry, derived from religion and tradition, is an important component of marriage that often reflects social and cultural values. The development of an increasingly modern, dynamic and efficient society has led to the provision of increasingly varied dowries. The purpose of this study is to analyze what kind and how the variation of dowry types in 1980-1990 recorded in the Marriage Certificate book at KUA Umbulharjo Yogyakarta City.
This type of research is field research and is descriptive-analytical in nature. The data collection technique is by observation then the data that has been collected is analyzed qualitatively with a historical approach.
The results of this study indicate that the variation of dowry types in the Marriage Certificate book 1980-1990 at KUA Umbulharjo contained four forms of dowry, namely money, jewelry, religious symbols, and other forms. Dowry in the form of money and religious symbols became the most popular dowry in various circles of society at that time. Money is considered to provide convenience and flexibility that other physical objects do not have. Meanwhile, religious symbols serve as a reminder of spiritual values that are considered important in married life. On the other hand, giving a dowry in the form of jewelry is synonymous with social status but this does not apply in this case because the data obtained shows that prospective husbands who give jewelry dowries generally work as private workers. One of the main reasons is the high aesthetic and symbolic value of jewelry. In addition, jewelry has a relatively stable value compared to cash.}
