"From law point of view and religious belief, interfaith marriage\r\n(IM) is debatable. Some couples struggle for a recognition before the\r\nlaw without religion conversion. Indonesian Conference on Religion\r\nand Peace (ICRP) of Jakarta and Persik of Salatiga are two NGOs to\r\npromote a dialogue on religious and interfaith marriage issues\r\nconsistantly. For such marriage advocacy seekers the organizations\r\ngive them hope. Three research questions to answer in this study are\r\nas follow. 1) Why do ICRP Jakarta and Persik Salatiga carry out\r\ninterfaith marriage advocacy?; 2) To what extent does the advocacy\r\ngo against the hegemony of interfaith marriage prohibition?; 3) What\r\nconsensus is there in the advocacy? ICRP Jakarta and Persik Salatiga\r\nfigures, interfaith couples, religion figures, Religion Affairs and\r\nDemographic Affairs Office staffs, textbooks, journals and previous\r\nresearch of related topic are the sources of data. The three theories\r\napplied in this study are theory of legal pluralism, theory of resistence,\r\nand theory of functional structural.\r\nThe study concluds the fllowings. First, the arguments the two\r\nNGOs use in the advocacy are juridical, phylosophical, and\r\nsociological reasons. They argue that there was no express interfaithmarriage\r\nprohibtion in the Indonesian law. They also said that love\r\nwas a gift from God, and religious differences should not hinder their\r\nmarriage as each of them take it for granted. Interfaith couples\r\nsociologically undergoe a discrimination despite religious leader’s\r\napproval upon their marriage. Second, advocacy is carried out through\r\nconsulting, educating, informing, marriage processing and religious\r\nleaders’ faciliting. Experience, human resource, and strong relation are\r\nthe firewood of advocacy and resistance against interfaith marriage\r\nprohibition. Advocacy is carried out in two ways: open (legal and\r\nmarriage administration path) and close (consultation, education, and\r\ninformation). Third, interfaith-couple advocacy brings in consensus\r\non interfaith marriage record. Eminent interfaith-case-concern figures\r\n– ICRP and Persik representatives, religious figures, interfaith couples, and Demographic Office staffs – involve in the discussion to\r\nreach the consensus."^^ .
