"The focus of this research is to conceptualize the Minangkabau\r\ntraditional motto, examine its essence in building character, and\r\nexplore the implementation of the traditional motto “Adat Basandi\r\nSyarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah” into Islamic Religious Education\r\n(PAI) to build student character at Public Senior High School (SMA\r\nN) 10 Padang, West Sumatra. This qualitative study involves three\r\nteachers of Islamic Religious Education, utilizing field research and\r\ncase study techniques. The research location is SMA N 10 Padang,\r\nwith data collected through observation, interviews, and\r\ndocumentation. Data analysis was conducted during the research\r\nprocess and conclusions were drawn using Miles and Huberman's\r\ntechnique. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation,\r\ntechnical triangulation, and time triangulation. The main theoretical\r\nframework used is Krathwohl’s Internalization theory, supplemented\r\nby the 18-character values developed by Zubaedi.\r\nThe findings of this research address the first problem by\r\nidentifying three changes in customary adages: (1) “Adat Nan Ampek”\r\n(four customs), which asserts that custom holds the highest authority\r\nand influences every aspect of life; (2) “Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak\r\nBasandi Adat,” which signifies the integration of indigenous and\r\nIslamic values following the introduction of Islam to Minangkabau;\r\nand (3) “Custom Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah,” where\r\nIslamic law begins to dominate and redefine customs. The essence of\r\nthe Minangkabau traditional motto in character building includes\r\nstrengthening Islamic beliefs and worship, promoting humanity and\r\ncommunity, fostering nationalism, leadership, and deliberation,\r\nenhancing intelligence and wisdom, encouraging economic\r\nproductivity, and maintaining integrity and commitment.\r\nThe implementation of the traditional motto “Adat Basandi\r\nSyarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah” into Islamic religious education\r\nat SMA N 10 Padang is evident in the curriculum, teaching module\r\ndesign, learning materials, and evaluation processes. The internalization of ABS-SBK (Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi\r\nKitabullah) and the development of PROPELA (Pancasila Student\r\nProfile) character values are integrated into school activities. The\r\ncharacter values fostered at SMA N 10 Padang include (1) faith and\r\ndevotion to God Almighty with noble character, (2) global diversity,\r\n(3) independence, (4) cooperation, and (5) critical and creative\r\nreasoning. These values are developed through various programs and\r\nactivities within the school environment. However, tolerance and\r\nenvironmental care are character values that need further\r\nenhancement. The internalization of ABS-SBK into Islamic Religious\r\nEducation aims to build the Pancasila student profile at SMA N 10\r\nPadang by enhancing teacher professionalism through training,\r\nimproving Minangkabau traditional literacy facilities, and integrating\r\nMinangkabau cultural values into the learning process."^^ .
