"The modernity occurring in Mangkunegaran Palace had born\r\nhealth and sanitation problems which triggered a debate, turmoil, and\r\nconflict within Muslim community leading to the society’s perception\r\nshift of the issue. The dynamic urges Muslim community to rethink of\r\nhealth and sanitation.\r\nThe research applied a political sociology approach. The history\r\nof health and sanitation practiced by Mangkunegaran nobles and the\r\nfellows was examined under the theory of knowledge of Michel\r\nFoucault (w. 1984), theory of mimicry of Homi K. Bhabha (l. 1949),\r\nand theory of society modernity of Muhammad Ali. Traced back to\r\narchive and newspapers, the data were verified, interpreted, and\r\nhistoriographied to discover historical facts.\r\nThe study bore the following results. First, from 1916 to 1942\r\nSwapraja Mangkunegaran thrived to a traditional modern city as the\r\npopulation increased significantly, new settlements grew irregularly,\r\nand several progressive associations and traditional ones were\r\nestablished. The phenomenon influenced the society’s life politically,\r\nsocially, and religiously. Second, the dynamic brought health and\r\nsanitation to an enigmatic situation for Swapraja Mangkunegaran. The\r\ndwellers’ poor understanding of health and sanitation was commonly\r\nfound in the area making knowledge restructure was an urgent issue\r\nto take into account. The situation made Mangkunegara VII come up\r\nwith medical workers, known as dokter Swapraja, in his reign. The\r\ndivision became important. The team worked so persuasively\r\nintruding into every line of life that the action turned into a health and\r\nsanitation movement. Third, the health and sanitation movement\r\nencouraged Muslim community to take part. Selective adaptive and\r\nrefute responses also appeared. The former emerged due to the belief\r\nthat health and sanitation were not about free from diseases, but they\r\nalso represented Muslim identity with which they confirmed their\r\nposition in the full-of-symbol society. On the other hand, there was a\r\nrefusal against the policy coming from some of the community. They argued that the movement had violated the nobility of Islam and\r\noccasionally disobeyed cultural aspects. The unacceptance impacted\r\nthe national politic movements of Muslim community."^^ .
