abstract: Currently, economic demands in family life are increasing, causing many family couples to decide to separate physically and in place (Long Distance Marriage) for a certain interest. Long Distance Marriage describes the situation of couples who are physically separated, namely one partner must go to another place for certain interests such as work. Establishing a long-distance marriage relationship is not an easy matter compared to couples who live together. This is due to the factors of distance, meetings, and very limited communication. This study focuses on the impact of long-distance marriage on household harmony within the framework of Islamic law, with a specific case study in Ambit Village, Waled District, Cirebon Regency.
This research is a field research using qualitative research, this study involves in-depth interviews with married couples who are in long-distance relationships, Data collection also includes participant observation and analysis of relevant Islamic legal text documents. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the principles of Islamic family law, especially those related to marriage, the rights of couples, and family harmony. While the data analysis technique is carried out by means of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions.
The research reveals that long-distance marriages in Ambit Village pose significant challenges to household harmony. Long-distance marriages bring about negative impacts such as loss of trust, lack of communication, unmet sexual needs, negative influences from the environment, loneliness, infidelity, and the potential for divorce. However, these relationships can also yield benefits, such as financial support, child-rearing, testing patience as a form of worship, strengthening marital commitment, increasing trust, maintaining dignity, and enhancing gratitude. Success in long-distance marriages largely depends on mental readiness, good communication, and the couple's commitment to fulfilling their obligations.
