"This dissertation explores the dynamics of transformation and\r\ncomplexity of gender relations between women and men in the\r\nAngkola Batak tribe. The research addresses the following questions:\r\n(1) To what extent do customary and religious relations influence\r\nchanges in the Angkola Batak patriarchal patrilineal cultural order? (2)\r\nWhat are the dynamics of gender construction and reconstruction in\r\nthe Angkola Batak community? (3) Why do Angkola Batak men and\r\nwomen accommodate and maintain the current patriarchal culture?\r\nand (4) What is the agency and transformation of gender relations\r\nbetween Angkola Batak women and men?\r\nThis research was conducted in the capitals of Padang Lawas\r\nand North Padang Lawas Regencies, namely Sibuhuan City and\r\nGunung Tua City, North Sumatra, over a period of three years (2020-\r\n2023). The study employs a naturalistic qualitative approach with a\r\nsocio-anthropological lens. Data was collected through observations\r\nand interviews with married Batak women and men, traditional\r\nleaders, and religious leaders. The collected data was selected,\r\nreduced, narrated, and continuously analyzed to identify patterns\r\nbased on field experiences. In the interpretation stage, the author\r\nattempts to systematically interpret all field findings, including\r\nhistory, life cycles, cultural and religious experiences, and the\r\nunderstood meaning of being a man and a woman, as well as document\r\nsources from previous research related to this dissertation. This\r\nresearch is placed in a postfeminist perspective using the concepts of\r\nagency, interrelation, and the interaction of customs, religion, and\r\nmodernity in the context of gender relations as the main analytical\r\nframework.\r\nThe results of this research found that: (1) The interaction and\r\ninterrelation of Angkola Batak customs with Islamic religion serve as\r\nthe basis for reconstructing patriarchal culture. On the one hand,\r\nIslamic teachings have reinforced the patriarchal and patrilineal\r\nculture of the Angkola Bataks, where men remain the household leaders and primary breadwinners, and lineage is traced through the\r\nfather. However, on the other hand, Islam has significantly liberated\r\nwomen from patriarchal confines, exemplified by the phenomenon of\r\ndaughters gaining inheritance rights, thereby undermining the strong\r\npatriarchal structure. (2) The development of the times and economic\r\nand social conditions are reshaping the gender roles and relations of\r\nAngkola Batak men and women. Angkola Batak men and women\r\nadapt to contemporary contexts while maintaining their gender\r\nidentities as Muslim Bataks. (3) Economic needs necessitate\r\ncooperation between men and women, with women increasingly\r\ncontributing to family income. Patriarchal culture indirectly requires\r\nthat working women continue to fulfill domestic responsibilities,\r\nrevealing no linear causal relationship between paid work and gender\r\nrelations within families. (4) This dissertation found that women who\r\nlive in a patriarchal order, rather than being oppressed victims, they\r\nact as agents of change in Batak society. Their involvement in\r\npreserving Batak culture is an active social intervention that can shape,\r\nreshape, and expand understanding of the Batak Angkola patriarchal\r\npatrilineal culture. On the other hand, the roles they play can directly\r\nnavigate the rapidly changing modern world. The attitude of male\r\ndominance in the patriarchal patrilineal social structure in this study\r\nalso cannot be interpreted as a form of arbitrary oppression of women\r\nby male figures who are in a crisis phase with problematic masculinity.\r\nThis is because men also experience their own complexities. The\r\ncomplexity of the economy and the figure of the leader, mixed in their\r\nefforts to maintain self-esteem (marwah) and masculine identity, all\r\nof which are entangled in the vortex of modernity which makes\r\ncompetition for jobs with decent wages tighter and living standards\r\nincrease. Thus, this dissertation study generally refutes claims that\r\ntend to reduce the complexity that occurs in the field regarding gender\r\nrelations between men and women who live in a patriarchal patrilineal\r\nsociety construction.\r\nTheoretically, this dissertation argues that the generalizing\r\nframework of Western feminism may not be fully relevant for\r\nstudying the transformation and complexity of gender relations in the Angkola Batak context. Men’s involvement is crucial in finding\r\nsolutions for women, and women can negotiate patriarchal culture\r\nthrough their agency. Meanwhile, men in a patrilineal patriarchal\r\nsociety can recognize the plurality of power (transformation of gender\r\nrelations), and women, through persistence, can manage patriarchal\r\ndominance, balancing roles in both public and domestic spheres."^^ .
