"The Horja Godang Tradition (Grand Ceremony) in the wedding customs of the Batak Angkola community in North Padang Lawas is a cultural heritage that has been preserved and passed down through generations until today. This tradition holds a significant role in the wedding processions and is considered an obligation for the indigenous community, particularly for the descendants of royal families in Batak Angkola culture. Although the implementation of Horja Godang requires substantial expenses and is not regulated by Indonesia’s positive law, this tradition is still highly respected and upheld by the community. Its persistence reflects the profound meaning and values it embodies for the Batak Angkola people. Amidst the ever-evolving modern era, Horja Godang continues to stand as a timeless symbol of cultural identity.This tradition serves as concrete evidence of how the Batak Angkola people safeguard and cherish the customs passed down by their ancestors. Based on this, this study seeks to answer two main questions: First, how is the process of the Horja Godang tradition in contemporary Batak Angkola wedding customs viewed from the perspective of 'Urf? Second, why do the Batak Angkola people continue to preserve the Horja Godang tradition in their wedding customs?\r\nThis study is a field research using an empirical legal approach. The data collection techniques include observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with Batak Angkola traditional leaders and the North Padang Lawas community. For data analysis, Peter L. Berger’s theory of social construction and the theory of ‘Urf are utilized as analytical tools.\r\nThe results show that Horja Godang is a Batak Angkola customary tradition closely associated with weddings, especially in North Padang Lawas. The Horja Godang procession involves several stages, such as Mangaririt Boru, Manulak Sere, Mangalap Boru, Martahi Ulutot and Martahi Godang, and Ajar Poda. This tradition falls into the category of ‘Urf Khas because it is specifically applicable to the Batak Angkola community. In terms of substance, it aligns with the principles of Islamic law. However, in the context of ‘Urf, the tradition as a whole cannot be categorized as ‘Urf Shahih. This is due to some practices, such as the act of throwing rice at the panortor (dancers), which conflict with Shari’ah principles.This tradition symbolizes gratitude, pride, and joy and is orally transmitted as a way of preserving the values of togetherness, solidarity, and cultural identity. It also provides a platform for inviting numerous prayers from guests for the couple. Horja Godang functions as a means to create a marriage that is sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah (tranquil, loving, and blessed), which is believed to help prevent divorce.In its implementation, Horja Godang requires substantial expenses.
