In Ngotet Village, Rembang Regency, the practice of weton calculation is an obligation for couples who will enter into marriage. Weton calculation in determining the compatibility of couples can influence family decisions, even causing delays or cancelations of marriages if the weton results of women are considered higher than men, which is often associated with negative stereotypes against women. This raises the questions, First, how do women view the existence of the weton calculation tradition in Ngotet Village? Second, how is the social construction of the weton calculation tradition in Ngotet Village? Third, how does 'urf review the practice of weton calculation in Ngotet Village? The method used by the author in this study is field research which explains, collects and analyzes natural facts, the community in Ngotet Village. For data collection, the researcher first observed the community and the practice of calculating weton. Then, direct interviews with informants supported by previous research and books related to the research being studied and documentation in order to obtain accurate results in writing the thesis, using a sociological approach and the social construction theory of Peter L. Berger and Al-'urf. This research found: First, the Ngotet Village community has two main views regarding the weton tradition. The majority of the community views weton as a non-discriminatory tradition because it is in line with Islamic religious norms and customs, where the husband's role as the leader of the household is considered in line with religious teachings. In contrast, a minority of the community considers this tradition discriminatory because it limits women's rights, especially if the weton results are not suitable, which can hinder the relationship towards marriage. Second, the tradition of weton calculation in marriage is maintained through a social dialectic cycle of objectivation, internalization and externalization, which strengthens its sustainability as a social reality. Third, in terms of sharia, this tradition is a typical 'urf that is part of local culture and 'urf 'amali because it is realized in real action. In terms of validity, the weton calculation tradition is 'urf fasid, because it is prone to causing harm such as gender discrimination. Thus, reinterpretation of weton is needed to ensure that this tradition remains relevant, fair, and brings benefits according to Islamic values. date: 2024-11-18 date_type: published pages: 173 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS SYARI’AH DAN HUKUM thesis_type: masters thesis_name: other citation: Agung Pratama Dharma, NIM.: 22203012098 (2024) PRAKTIK PERHITUNGAN WETON PERSPEKTIF MASYARAKAT DESA NGOTET KECAMATAN REMBANG KABUPATEN REMBANG.
