"This dissertation examines the politics and ritual sensibilities of\r\nSufi dance, focusing on community development, women's\r\ninvolvement, and the commodification of religion in Indonesia. The\r\nstudy centers on two communities: the Nusantara Sufi Dance\r\nCommunity and the Mafia Sholawat Sufi Dance Community, both of\r\nwhich have experienced rapid growth over the past decade. Although\r\nfounded by two different actors, each of these communities was\r\nestablished by preachers who share a common profession. Both\r\npromote Sufi dance performances associated with popular culture,\r\nintegrating these performances as a fundamental part of their religious\r\noutreach. Data for this dissertation were gathered through a\r\nphenomenological ethnographic approach over approximately one\r\nyear, involving twelve informants, including six key informants, three\r\nbeginner dancers, and three general audience members. The research\r\nwas conducted in Ponorogo, East Java, its surrounding cities, and\r\nSemarang, Central Java.\r\nThe dissertation explores the development of Sufi dance in\r\nIndonesia, emphasizing its political and sensibility dimensions. Here,\r\n\"politics\" refers to two aspects: first, everyday politics, which involves\r\nthe diverse tactics and strategies dancers use to perform Sufi dance,\r\nand second, practical politics, which pertains to interests and\r\nconnections with political elites. From a sensibility perspective, this\r\ndissertation reveals that Sufi dance practice embodies the experience\r\nof heightened religious sensitivity and sentiment. The study finds that\r\nSufi dancers situate their practice not only within a ritual framework\r\nbut also within a broader political context encompassing the\r\ndissemination of Sufi dance, gender aspects highlighting how female\r\ndancers claim public space, and economic dimensions related to self\r\nand community development.\r\nThis study is positioned within academic debates on\r\nembodiment, focusing on themes of sensation, emotion, and affect, as\r\nwell as on ritual economy involving commodification and ethical self\r\ndevelopment. In this dissertation, embodiment studies are linked to\r\nunderstanding the practice and experience of forming religious\r\nsensations through sensory engagement, particularly through bodily\r\nmovements, sounds, and listening, as well as spatial and temporal\r\narrangements. Additionally, ritual economy connects public\r\nperformances of Sufi dance to encounters with the Islamic market,\r\ncommodification, and politics. The study argues that the popularity\r\nand extensive spread of Sufi dance in Indonesia are closely tied to\r\nintersections of politics, popular culture, and women’s participation in\r\npublic spaces. The presence of Sufi dance rituals in public spaces\r\nsignifies the importance of space in cultivating religious feelings that\r\nactivate affective bodies. Rather than merely focusing on bodily\r\nmovement and sound (and listening) as primary drivers of religious\r\nsensitivity, this study shows a series of alignments in the form of\r\ncontinuous conditioning of piety within an interactive process that coproduces\r\nspace. Ultimately, the main argument of this research asserts\r\nthat Sufi dance, as part of ritual performance, should not be viewed\r\nsolely as a form of commercial commodification but as a ritual process\r\nthat also generates experiences of sensibility and piety."^^ .
