"Spoken texts are known for their complexity, for instance, speech is used to convey\r\nmessages to influence people with various linguistic strategies. The rise of social\r\nmedia use has added to the reach and impact of speech. Those with large platforms\r\nhave a great opportunity to be heard by society, one of them is Jordan Peterson. He\r\nconveyed a speech entitled “Message to Muslims” through his YouTube Channel\r\nand gained a lot of attention from the Muslim audience. This study aims to find out\r\nappraisal devices reflected in Jordan Peterson’s speech and his ideological position.\r\nUsing the descriptive qualitative method, this research employs the Appraisal\r\ntheory by Martin & White (2005) and the ideological framework by Martin (1992).\r\nThe findings in the study consist of 25 attitude items with 16 positive evaluations\r\nand 9 negative evaluations which show feelings, emotions, judgments, and\r\nappreciation in a direct and indirect way. There are 11 engagement items consisting\r\nof 5 monogloss which are considered as taken for granted and 6 heterogloss which\r\nindicates the use of dialogistic alternatives. Besides, 17 graduation items show\r\nupscaling and downscaling the evaluation. Meanwhile, the analysis of ideology\r\nreveals that Peterson uses the left protagonist ideology in his speech, which means\r\nhe supports the issue by persuading Muslims to gain power."^^ .
