abstract: This study will examine social criticism in the novella
Rijālu fī ash Shams by
Ghassan Kanafani. Researchers are interested in raising this topic because they
want to reveal the author's social criticism that reflects the era in the novella. This
research was analyzed using the dialectic method with the approach of literary
sociology Alan Swingewood. Issues to be discussed include social criticism
reflecting the tim es, the process of creation of the novella Rijālu fī ash Shams,
and the novella Rijālu fī ash Shams in relation to history, evidenced by several
responses from readers who have literary and historical backgrounds. Research
data in the form of sentences or paragraphs contained in the novella Rijālu fī ash
Shams by Ghassan Kanafani , as well as other supporting data from history books
and readers' responses to the novella Rijālu fī ash Shams. Based on the results of
the analysis, the researcher found that ther e were several contents of the author's
social criticism in the novella Rijālu fī ash Shams that reflected the conditions of
Palestine after 1948, consisting of; First, the author's critique of refugee
conditions and the struggle for decent living , second criticism of the ruling
authority, and third, criticism of political and economic irony. As for the process
of creation, the novella Rijālu fī ash Shams by Ghassan Kanafani was created
based on humanitarian goals and the author's concern for the surroundi ng
conditions. While in relation to history, judging from the response or response of
readers, this novella is stated to have relevance to the facts of Palestinian history
after 1948.
