"In general, authority and leadership in public spaces within the\r\nJamaah Tabligh (a missionary movement) are predominantly\r\ncontrolled by men, as is common in many contemporary patriarchal\r\nreligious traditions. While women play a significant role in education,\r\nstudies on women’s roles in the Jamaah Tabligh largely omit\r\ndiscussions on their religious authority. This research examines the\r\neducational processes and knowledge transmission at Pesantren\r\n(Islamic Boarding School) Dar El-Wihdah, Sragen, focusing on the\r\nformation and development of female ulama (Islamic scholars) within\r\nthe Jamaah Tabligh. A key inquiry addresses how pesantren\r\nstructures cultivate and empower female Jamaah Tabligh students\r\nwith religious authority.\r\nUsing Richard A. Nielsen’s pragmatic theory of women’s\r\nempowerment, this study explores how authority is extended to\r\nwomen within patriarchal norms to reinforce the movement’s\r\npatriarchal base. Theories of sameness and difference are also applied\r\nto examine the unique positioning of female ulama within the Dar El-\r\nWihdah Pesantren context.\r\nEthnographic methods were employed, including participant\r\nobservation and semi-structured and unstructured in-depth interviews\r\nwith 17 informants: 4 leaders/owners, 4 alumni, 9 students, and 1\r\nparticipant from taklim (religious teaching) activities. Data was\r\nvalidated using triangulation of techniques and sources, combining\r\nobservation, interviews, and document analysis.\r\nThis study finds that: (1) Pesantren Dar El-Wihdah consolidates\r\npatriarchal authority by positioning female ulama as key figures with\r\nunrestricted access to women’s spaces. (2) Female ulama serve as\r\nda’wah (missionary) agents amid inter-organizational religious\r\ninfluence. The school emphasizes clerical training with specialized\r\nfacilities, such as Rumah Quran (Quran House) and Marhalah Ta’lim\r\nAly (higher learning programs), creating a cadre of Jamaah Tabligh female clerics who operate within an extended, though limited, public\r\nsphere."^^ .
