The Sekaten tradition, which was originally a Hindu-Buddhist ritual for the spirits of ancestors, has now become an Islamic celebration through gamelan art to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. The name Sekaten comes from the gamelan Sekati or the term syahadatain. Modernization changed the tradition, including its integration with commercial activities such as night markets, although it was later removed to preserve the religious essence. Abdi dalem plays a key role in rectifying people's understanding and maintaining the meaning of Sekaten tradition as a spiritual and cultural celebration. This study used a qualitative approach to explore the understanding of the meaning of Sekaten tradition in Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace. Data collection techniques included participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted descriptively qualitatively by compiling the results of observations and interviews systematically to improve understanding of the phenomenon. The results were analyzed using Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic approach to explore historical influence, prejudice, and horizon fusion in interpreting the Sekaten tradition. This research shows that the views of the courtiers of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace towards the Sekaten tradition have various interpretations, including as a means of da'wah, cultural preservation, public entertainment, a symbol of the role of the Sultan, and education. These different views are influenced by the social background, culture, and beliefs of each individual. Through Gadamer's hermeneutic approach, it is found that effective historical influences such as modernization, increased education, and the lifestyle of the community have changed the perspective of the courtiers. Existing prejudices, such as the view of the Sultan's role, which used to be spiritually dominant, have now shifted to be more symbolic. In addition, the role of courtiers as custodians of tradition, once considered sacred and dedicated, is now more often seen as an additional activity. This transformation has resulted in a new meaning of the sekaten tradition. If previously this tradition was seen as a form of respect for ancestors and spiritual means, it is now more widely understood as public entertainment, cultural formality, and efforts to preserve cultural heritage. The process of horizon fusion between traditional and modern values reflects the adaptation of the Sekaten tradition in the face of social and cultural change. %K Abdi Dalem, Sekaten Tradition, Hermeneutics, Gadamer %D 2024 %I UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA %L digilib70098
