N2  - The Minangkabau philosophy of anak dipangku kemenakan dibimbiang reflects the responsibility of the mamak as a guiding figure, protector, and manager of the lives of the kemenakan. This has given authority to the mamak as a leader in matrilineal kinship. However, in modern times, the authority of the mamak has undergone a significant transformation, especially its role towards the kemenakan. This research is part of an observation, interview, and documentation study in qualitative data collection. While data processing takes several stages, namely the data reduction stage, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. To analyse the transformation, Michel Foucault's theory of power relations and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the arena are needed.
The result of this finding is that substantive and relational mamak authority has experienced a significant decline today. This decline is caused by the shift of indigenous knowledge as the basis of mamak authority towards modern knowledge that is more relevant in the social and economic context. This of course encourages resistance from kemenakan who are more proficient in modern knowledge and is also driven by the ownership of economic, cultural, symbolic and social capital. This capital helps the kemenakan in the struggle for dominance with the mamak in the economic arena, moral arena and knowledge.
This research contributes to understanding social change in Minangkabau society, especially the relationship between mamak and kemenakan. The findings are expected to serve as a foundation for future research.
