"The narrative verses in the Qur’an constitute more than half of\r\nits total verses. This signifies the Qur’an particular emphasis on such\r\nnarratives, despite their lack of regulative implications akin to legal\r\nverses. Unfortunately, the majority of interpretations of these\r\nnarratives tend to produce meanings of limited benefit or necessity,\r\nsuch as aligning the verses with scientific discoveries. This\r\ninterpretative method even seems to force the text Qur’anic text to\r\nalign relative and temporary phenomena, leading some scholars to\r\nreject it. However, systematic alternatives have yet to be fully\r\nconstructed. For instance, while Abduh criticizes scholars\r\npreoccupied with scientific interpretations for distancing the\r\nQur’anic reading from its intended hidayah (guidance), he does not\r\nprioritize suitable tools to capture this hidayah. Khalafallah and\r\nShahrur, on the other hand, systematically approach narrative verses\r\nusing modern tools to extract hidayah from them—though with\r\ndiffering orientations: Khalafallah adopts a literary tendency, while\r\nShahrur leans toward philosophical analysis.\r\nUsing Gadamer’s hermeneutic theory, this library-based\r\nresearch addresses several questions: (i) How do Khalafallah and\r\nShahrur construct their readings of Qur’anic narrative verses, and\r\nwhat similarities and differences exist between them? (ii) Why is it\r\nnecessary to reconstruct approaches to understanding narrative\r\nverses? and (iii) What are the implications of Khalafallah and\r\nShahrur’s readings of these verses?\r\nThis study reveals several key findings. First, the constructions\r\nof Qur’anic narrative interpretations by Khalafallah and Shahrur\r\nemerged during Islam’s engagement with Western powers, prompting\r\nshifts in thought and methodology from their predecessors. Their\r\ndiffering tendencies were shaped by their respective intellectual\r\nhistories. Khalafallah, whose academic background lies in literary\r\nstudies, was influenced by prominent figures such as Taha Husain,\r\nAmin al-Khuli, Mustafâ ‘Abd al-Razâq, and Ahmad Amin, who\r\nshaped his thought, particularly in linking literature with Qur’anic studies. Shahrur’s construction of thought, which he claimed was\r\nphilosophical, was influenced by his academic studies in the Soviet\r\nUnion in the field of engineering which equipped him with a\r\nsystematic and analytical approach in interpreting texts, including\r\nthe Qur’an. There, Shahrur encountered Hegel’s philosophy and\r\nlinguistic theories from figures such as Ibn Jinni and al-Jurjani.\r\nThe similarity between the two lies in prioritizing the purpose\r\nof Qur’anic narratives over proving historical accuracy. However,\r\ntheir methodological frameworks differ. Khalafallah’s literary\r\nperspective emphasizes the psychological dimensions of the audience\r\nin engaging with Qur’anic narratives, whereas Shahrur’s historical\r\nphilosophy aligns closely with Ibn Khaldun’s sociology.\r\nSecond, Khalafallah argues for reconstructing the reading of\r\nQur’anic narratives due to the tendency of interpretations to produce\r\nnew meanings without considering their relevance to the original\r\nintent. Similarly, Shahrur critiques the predominant interpretations\r\nas irrelevant or unnecessary. While some attempts at alternatives\r\nexist, they lack systematic construction. Khalafallah proposes a\r\nmethod rooted in literary criticism inspired by usūl al-fiqh principles\r\nsuch as istiqra (induction) and tadarruj (gradualism). Shahrur, on the\r\nother hand, suggests understanding narratives as al-sunan altārīkhiyyah\r\n(historical laws), enabling humanity to predict and\r\nanticipate future events.\r\nThird, Khalafallah’s literary approach to Qur’anic narratives\r\nhas at least three implications: de-factualization, demythologization,\r\nand transformation of Qur’anic stories. Meanwhile,\r\nthe shared implications of Khalafallah’s literary perspective and\r\nShahrur’s historical philosophy include de-historicization of\r\nnarratives, humanization of story characters, and an interpretive\r\nfocus on the objectives of the stories.
