The word za’ama appears 17 times in 16 verses across 10 chapters of the Qur'an, with meanings that vary depending on the context. This research is based on an in-depth library analysis to identify the basic meaning, relational meaning, synchronic and diachronic development, as well as the weltanschauung associated with the term. Through the semantic method, this study first determines the basic meaning of za’ama as to presume. Its relational meaning involves syntagmatic and paradigmatic analyses, yielding interpretations such as to consider, to declare, to claim, and to guarantee (in syntagmatic analysis), as well as connections to terms like Ẓanna, Syakka, Ar-Ra’su, I’tiqada, ’Arafa, and ’Alima (in paradigmatic analysis). Synchronic and diachronic analyses reveal that in the pre-Qur'anic period, za’ama was often used in metaphorical contexts. In the Qur'anic period, its usage became more complex, encompassing concepts of belief and responsibility that reflect theological and social nuances. In the post-Qur'anic period, the term evolved into a key element in intellectual discourse and poetry, illustrating the Qur'an's profound influence on the Arabic language and Islamic thought. This study reveals that the development of the meaning of za’ama in the Qur'an reflects the influence of the sacred text in shaping the weltanschauung of Muslims. The word symbolizes a transformation of thought from intuitive to rational, encompassing concepts of belief, acknowledgment, and responsibility. By employing Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic approach, this research demonstrates that the meaning of za’ama has broader dimensions than commonly understood. These findings provide the public with new insights into the significant diversity of meanings associated with the term. Furthermore, this study contributes to Qur'anic xx studies and classical Arabic semantics while opening new avenues for interdisciplinary approaches to understanding sacred texts.
