description: The wasathiyah issue is not something new that has emerged recently. This issue has actually been discussed since the early days of revelation in the 7th century AD. Discussions about this matter are reflected in the way Muslims understand the meaning of the teachings contained in the narrative of the Qur'an and are also reflected in the procedures The Prophet and his companions in religion. This article starts from the assumption that Islam is a religion that is intolerant, radical, liberal and the like. So in this research the author wants to examine modern and contemporary mufassir to answer the problem above. In this case, Muhammad Abduh and Sayyid Qutb regarding their interpretation regarding the meaning of wasathan in Q.S al-Baqarah [2]; 143. The author proposes three problem formulations including First, How to construct the wasathiyah concept of Muhammad Abduh and Sayyid Qutb in Q.S al-Baqarah [2]: 143. Second, why does Muhammad Abduh and Sayyid Qutb's construction of the concept of wasathiyah tend to be inclusive and exclusive? Third, what is the relevance of the construction of Muhammad Abduh and Sayyid Qutb's thoughts regarding the concept of wasathiyah in Q.S al-Baqarah [2]: 143 with the context of religious diversity. In the results of this research, the author found that in the interpretation of historical function by examining the sabâb an-Nuzûl and the results of previous mufassir interpretations of this verse and its derivations, the author found social patterns that occurred in the two figures in relation to the conditions surrounding them. In terms of meaning function, Muhammad Abduh tends to interpret these words more inclusively, while Sayyid Qutb tends to interpret them more exclusively, and of the two interpreters, the one that is relevant to the context of religious diversity is Muhammad Abduh's interpretation.
