%X Cosplay as a form of popular cultural expression has developed into a global phenomenon involving various elements, including crossplay or the practice of wearing costumes of characters with different genders (cross-dressing cosplay). This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of crossplay in the cosplay community, focusing on motivation, social perception, and gender implications that arise in this practice. The research method used is a qualitative approach with participatory observation techniques and in-depth interviews with crossdresser cosplayers at various cosplay events.
The results of the study show that crossplay is not only a form of appreciation for the characters played, but also a means of exploring gender identity and self-expression for the actors. In addition, there are various motivations behind the practice of crossplay, such as artistic challenges, character appreciation, and criticism of rigid gender norms. However, on the other hand, crossdresser cosplayers often face stereotypes and social stigmas related to their gender identity.
These findings indicate that crossplay in cosplay culture has complex social and psychological dimensions, where the boundaries between artistic expression and personal identity are often blurred. Therefore, this study contributes to expanding the understanding of the relationship between pop culture, gender performativity, and the social construction of identity in the cosplay community.
