abstract: The phenomenon of depression and stress among students is often caused by various pressures, including academic issues, distance from parents, and financial problems. This research aims to explore the role of social support in preventing depression among students, focusing on the personal experiences of the researcher and six student respondents who have also experienced depression. As a community development student who has experienced depression, I felt the positive impact of the social support received, which serves as a foundation for this research.
The method used is autoethnography, which allows the researcher to delve into personal experiences and listen to the stories of the respondents. Through in-depth interviews, I found that each respondent had unique experiences related to the social support they received from family, friends, and the community. Emotional support, such as care and understanding, as well as practical and informational support, proved to be very helpful for them in coping with stress and enhancing self-esteem.
The research results indicate that a positive social environment acts as a buffer against negative thoughts that often lead to symptoms of depression. Individual experiences show that social support not only helps in addressing current issues but also builds mental resilience to face future challenges. This research provides new insights into the importance of social support in maintaining students' mental health and recommends further research to explore the experiences of students from different backgrounds
