abstract: Children in extended families often face conflict and emotional vulnerability due to lack of open communication with stepparents. The absence of Self Disclosure is the main cause of strained relationships and the emergence of potential violence in families. This study aims to analyze interpersonal communication between children and stepparents in building Self Disclosure in Javanese and Sundanese extended families. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with in-depth interview methods and observations of four extended families in Surabaya, Temanggung, Yogyakarta, and Sumedang. The results showed that Self Disclosure grew from intense communication, trust, and emotional acceptance. Supporting factors include similar values, life experiences, and openness of communication, while obstacles include differences in character, past trauma, and limited time together. The study concluded that Self Disclosure plays an important role in creating harmonious relationships between children and stepparents. Therefore, education and communication assistance are needed in extended families. Further research can explore the role of culture in communication between other cross-ethnic families.
