"In this modern era the development of education\r\ndemands creative strategies and approach as they relate to\r\nthe education institutions‟s ability to compete for better\r\nteaching-learning practices that brings about better quality\r\nstudents. In Lampung this phenomenon is quite observable\r\nas there is a competition among pesantrens for a better\r\nteaching and educating religion field. Yet, the existing\r\nstudies emphasize the role of male ulamas the main\r\nauthority, overlooking the importance of female ulamas‟\r\ncontribution to religious tradition maintenace. This\r\ndissertation attempts to describe: 1) the portrait of female\r\nulamas‟ leadership in pesantrens in Lampung; 2) the contest\r\nitself within the institutions and why it occurs; 3) the\r\nconstruction of the contest, and; 4) the role of the authority.\r\nAll of these relate to the responses to the education new\r\nproducts comprising the aspects ofsystem, management,\r\nand model that move to education modernation.\r\nThis study employed several theories – grand theory\r\nof planned behavior, contest, leadership, female ulama, and\r\nauthority – some of which were used to view the contest\r\noccurred among female ulamas. The theories were applied\r\nnot only to examine the attitude, subjective norms of these\r\nfemale ulamas but also to control their behavior in terms of\r\npesentren education contest. This qualitative dissertation\r\ntook sociological approach. Data were collected through\r\nfield observation and interviews with various subjects of\r\nthe research (the female ulama figures, pesantren\r\ncaregivers, school teachers, santri, ustaz and ustazah,\r\nalumni, and the nearby neighbours). The data were condensed prior to continous analysis until common pattern\r\nwas generated. During the interpretation stage, the scholar\r\ninterpreted every finding structurally – from the history, the\r\nlife cycle to the experiences of the subjects.\r\nThe results show that 1) female ulamas have an\r\nindependent leadership character. They establish and lead\r\npesantrens, which support women improvement. 2) The\r\neducation contests occur indirectly as each contestant\r\nworks to surpass their opponents through the improvement\r\nof programs, curriculum, infrastructures, business units,\r\nhuman resource management, and social networking. The\r\nutmost spirits are education acces enhancement and gender\r\nequity. 3) The supporting social-cultural environment\r\nshapes the construct of female ulama leadership. The old\r\ntradition in pesantrens, which undermined women‟s\r\npotency, has gradually shifted along with the morewelcoming\r\nsociety. 4) Their leadership authority reflects a\r\nsynthesis of traditional authority (as the daughter of a kiai),\r\nlegal auhority (a legal entity), and charismatic authority\r\n(knowledge and competence). It shows that female ulama\r\nleadership can be be regarded a form of episthemological\r\ntransformation in scholarly Islam tradition. Their authority\r\nis not heir apparent but a reflection of a new inclusive\r\nauthority driven by gender equaity.
