abstract: Islamic religious education has an important role in shaping children’s character from an early age, especially through the role of parents as the main educators in the family. However, each community group has its own characteristics that can influence the parenting patterns and religious education applied. This research aims to describe and compare the characteristics of education and the roles of parents in Islamic religious education of children by farmers in Kalibeber Village, Wonosobo Regency and by fishermen in Karangasem Village, Batang Regency, Central Java, and then to describe and compare the similarities and differences. This study is a qualitative study. Data were obtained through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. Qualitative descriptive and comparative analysis are used to analyze data.
The results of the study shows that the characteristics of children's education by Kalibeber Wonosobo farmers are as follows: children's education is very important; educating children with the hope of being able to repay their parents and be devoted to their parents; educating children to be better than their parents who were once taught by their own parents; educating children with the hope that they can achieve higher education than their parents. Islamic religious education such as prayer and learning to recite the Qur’an is crucial; educating children as their parents taught them in the past. Increasing worship to Allah and providing motivation to children will increase the success of children's education. While the characteristics of children's education by the fishermen of Batang Karangasem are: children's education is very important; educating children to be successful children and devoted to their parents; educating children at home by giving good examples to children and monitoring children's behavior, so that children do not fall into things that are prohibited by norms and religion. Islamic religious education is vital through learning to recite the Qur’an at TPQ and performing prayers; efforts to improve children's education by providing educational expenses for children; feeling happy if the child is successful in education but if not successful, it is already God’s will and it has become the child’s fate.
Regarding the role of parents in their children's Islamic religious education, there is a similarity in that they both perform their roles, but there is a difference in that fishermen, even though they face challenges because the fathers often go to sea, remain active in shaping their children’s character through the values of independence, hard work, and sincerity, with mothers as the main caregivers. Meanwhile, farmers tend to entrust their children’s education to Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) after their children graduate from elementary school, reflecting their simplicity and strong desire to instill religious values, accompanied by moral support so that children can apply these values in their life.
