"This dissertation examines the economic-political network of the\r\nBazaar in Iran, which plays a central role in shaping informal public\r\ndiscourse through societal political channels. Within the structure of the\r\nBazaar, there are various subgroups with different ideologies and political\r\naffiliations, led by the Bazaar elite. The diversity of these Bazaar subgroups\r\nhas the potential to cause social conflicts within the Bazaar, driven by\r\nconflicts of interest. Historically, the Bazaar has been closely linked to\r\nsocial movements that have shaped Iran's socio-political landscape, both as\r\nopposition and as supporters of the ruling regime. The structure and\r\neconomic-political network of the Bazaar are complemented by a mass\r\nbase of middle-class Bazaaris who are assumed to adopt populist ideologies\r\nin political matters. The defeat of Mir-Hossein Mousavi in the 2009\r\npresidential election activated the Green Movement as the largest protest\r\nand demonstration since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, demanding justice\r\nover electoral fraud. On the other hand, Bazaaris, with their populist\r\nideology, also joined these protests and demonstrations to advocate for\r\ntheir political interests through the Persian Spring movement. The\r\nBazaaris’ resistance against the regime focused on demands for justice in\r\neconomic policies that severely harmed the Bazaar's trade markets,\r\nparticularly due to the regime’s failure in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive\r\nPlan of Action) nuclear deal, which disrupted the export-import business\r\nflow. Furthermore, the ruling regime sought to legitimize the status quo\r\nthrough policies such as tax hikes, price controls, and the privatization of\r\nthe private sector, aiming to eliminate the Bazaar as an economic-political\r\ninstitution.\r\nThis research aims to describe the economic-political network of the\r\nBazaaris; to explain the power mobilization of the bazaar, the Bazaaris, and\r\ntheir socio-political and economic-political alliances vis-à-vis the ruling\r\nregime; to examine the relationship between the Persian Spring and the\r\nArab Spring from an economic-political perspective; and to analyze the\r\nextent to which the social conflicts within the Bazaar during the Persian\r\nSpring have shaped the socio-political and economic-political dynamics\r\namid the ideological struggles in Iran. The study employs Raymond\r\nHinnebusch’s historical sociology framework, which views social\r\nmovements as historical phenomena characterized by recurring patterns\r\nover time. According to Hinnebusch, revolutionary movements, protests,\r\nand uprisings are shaped by the complex interplay of economic, political,\r\ncultural, and social factors. To further enrich the analysis of social mobilization activism, the study also adopts Asef Bayat’s approach. This\r\nframework allows for an in-depth examination of the intersection between\r\nsocial movements, Islam, and the political economy of the Bazaaris in the\r\ncontext of the Persian Spring—considering aspects such as ideology,\r\ndiscourse, actors, movements, and political motivations. The research\r\nemploys a mixed-methods approach for data collection, including the\r\ninventory of both digital and physical literature sources, as well as field\r\nresearch through observation, documentation, and interviews conducted\r\nboth online and offline.\r\nThis study demonstrates that the role and involvement of the\r\nBazaaris in the Persian Spring was notably significant. The Bazaaris\r\nmobilized their economic-political networks to galvanize public\r\nparticipation through a shared collective consciousness shaped by\r\ngeopolitical pressures, authoritarian governance, and policy disparities.\r\nUtilizing the principles of democratization, the Bazaaris—acting as\r\npolitical agents—succeeded in integrating various strands of political\r\nideologies that emerged in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic Revolution\r\ninto a unified populist framework. Furthermore, as a traditional economic\r\ninstitution, the bazaar did not reject the principles of economic liberalism\r\nper se, but strongly opposed the cultural infiltration of foreign values into\r\nIranian societal traditions—an opposition largely endorsed by the religious\r\nclerical class (mullahs). This argument is reinforced by the thesis that the\r\nPersian Spring should be understood as a patterned series of historical\r\nphenomena, rather than as a novel social movement. However, what\r\ndistinguishes the Persian Spring is its locus of control—internally driven\r\nby the economic interests of the Bazaaris, and externally motivated by the\r\nbroader struggle to reform the socio-political and economic conditions of\r\nIranian civil society."^^ .
