"This dissertation examines the Qur’anic movement and the\r\nactive mobility of urban Muslim women, taking the case of ‘Gerakan\r\nAyo Mengaji’ (GERAMI) in Jambi City. GERAMI is a movement that\r\npromotes Al-Qur’an learning based in mosques within the community,\r\nparticularly among women (mothers). While most pengajian groups\r\nposition women in a receptive role as recipients of knowledge,\r\nGERAMI emphasizes active participation, contribution, and social\r\nmobility of women in the public sphere. Given the relatively limited\r\nfocus of studies on women's religious movements on personal piety,\r\nthis dissertation offers a broader perspective by exploring the diverse\r\nexpressions of women in the Al-Qur'an movement, which does not\r\nmake individual piety its main focus. This dissertation seeks to answer\r\nthe questions about the background and development of GERAMI in\r\nrelation to women’s activism, and the process of women's agency in\r\nrelation to their efforts to claim public space. It also explains their\r\nreason for using Qur’anic tradition as a tool to shape their religious\r\nidentity.\r\nEmploying ethnographic methods, this dissertation aims to\r\nunderstand the dynamics of women’s activism in the context of the\r\nemergence and development of GERAMI in Jambi City. Research\r\ndata were collected through observation and participation in activities\r\nat preparatory classes, mosques, and other informal activities; as well\r\nas interviews with 19 informants, including initiators, volunteers, and\r\nsupporting informants. Supporting data were obtained from the\r\ncollection of photo documentation, membership archives, and social\r\nmedia content. The data were then analysed in depth using the\r\nconcepts of piety agency and Muslim subjectivity as a theoretical\r\nframework.\r\nThis research identifies several main findings. First, the\r\nestablishment of GERAMI as a Qur’anic movement demonstrates that\r\nthe emergence of a religious movement is not always related to the\r\ncollectivity of agents and religious authority. The movement was initiated by a single urban Muslim woman without formal religious\r\neducation background. Nonetheless, the success of this movement is\r\nsupported by the significant capital possessed by this woman, such as\r\neconomic, cultural, and social capital. Second, as a response to the\r\nidentity crisis, GERAMI provides an alternative space for urban\r\nMuslim women who face domestic obstacles in accessing public space\r\namidst the urban modernity. Active participation in the movement not\r\nonly facilitates their transition from domestic to public religious roles,\r\nbut also serves as a strategic mechanism for gaining and articulating\r\nagency. In this context, individual capabilities and modalities\r\ninfluence the articulation of individual agency within the Qur’anic\r\nmovement. Third, by choosing the Qur’anic movement, women can\r\ncreate a space to express and shape their religious identity as ideal\r\nMuslims - which they understand as a balance between the worldly\r\nand the hereafter. Beyond accessibility and affordability, the\r\ntheological status of the Al-Qur’an as a sacred text crucially\r\nestablishes it as a central symbol of individual piety expression and\r\nthe shaping of their religious identity. Consequently, GERAMI serves\r\nas a strategy for women in balancing social aspirations in the public\r\nspace with obedience to religious teachings. This movement presents\r\na dual arena of expression for women, namely public participation as\r\nwell as the articulation of pious agency as the formation of their\r\nreligious identity."^^ .
